Cavendish Park

The walk into Cavendish Park from Carlisle takes you through proper woodland - the kind where you're genuinely surprised to find it so close to a city. It's a nature reserve that rewards quiet observation rather than theatrical scenery. You'll find woodland trails that loop back on themselves, a small pond that's decent for spotting waterfowl if you arrive early, and enough native trees to make botanists happy.

Walkers will get the most from this one. There's nothing strenuous about it, which means families with younger legs can manage it without complaint, though children expecting drama or playground equipment will find it dull. The real appeal is the escape - birdsong, dappled light through the canopy, the smell of proper forest floor.

Allow an hour if you're moving at a normal pace, less if you've got impatient kids. It's the sort of place that works brilliantly as a morning outing before heading to one of the nearby caravan parks for lunch. Green Acres is just 3.2 miles away and highly rated, or Thornfield's glamping pods with hot tubs if you're feeling more indulgent after your walk.
