Catton Park

The Catton Park nature reserve sits just outside Wroxham, a proper slice of Norfolk's wetland character that most tourists barrel straight through on their way to the Broads. What you're looking at is a mix of reed beds, open water, and scrubby woodland - the sort of landscape that looks deceptively simple until you actually stand there with binoculars and realise how much is going on.

Birds are the main draw here. Winter brings visiting ducks and geese, while spring and summer offer breeding warblers and the occasional rarer visitor if you're lucky. It's genuinely rewarding for anyone with even a passing interest in birdwatching. Less committed walkers will find it pleasant enough, though the paths can get boggy and there's no particular "wow" moment - no dramatic vistas or ruined abbey to photograph.

You can work through it in an hour or two depending on how seriously you take the birdwatching. Pack binoculars and a notebook if you're into that sort of thing. The reserve sits well within striking distance of Norfolk Broads Haven (6.2 miles away), so it slots nicely into a Broads holiday if you want a quieter alternative to the endless boat hire and fish-and-chip shops that dominate the area.

Families with young kids might find it a bit underwhelming unless they're already enthusiastic naturalists. Best visited early morning when the light's decent and the birds are most active.
