Catchwater Plantation

The Catchwater Plantation sits just outside Bishop Auckland as a proper working forest rather than a manicured visitor attraction. You'll find it's mainly open woodland with established paths winding through mixed trees - some planted decades ago, others more recent additions. It's the kind of place where you can actually breathe, walk at your own pace, and not bump into tour groups every thirty seconds.

Walkers get the most from this one. The terrain is gentle enough for families with older kids, but younger children might find it a bit samey after an hour or so - it's forest, not theme park. There's genuine peace here though, especially on weekday mornings. You're looking at a solid two-hour walk if you explore properly, or a quick thirty-minute loop if you're just after fresh air between other plans.

Bring proper boots. The paths can be boggy depending on weather, and drainage isn't always brilliant. It's free to access, which is rare these days. If you're staying at Village Green Holiday Park just down the road, this makes an easy morning outing before heading into Bishop Auckland town centre for lunch. The forest works well as part of a bigger day out rather than a standalone destination - combine it with the town's castle or market square to get proper value from petrol.
