Medieval settlement

The medieval settlement near Bishop Auckland is one of those places that rewards curiosity more than it rewards casual wandering. If you're based at one of the caravan parks nearby - Bradley Burn or Kingfisher are both within two miles - this works well as a morning's activity before heading into Bishop Auckland itself for lunch. The site sits on decent walking country too, so you can easily combine it with longer routes across the Durham hills. Go when the light's good and the grass is short. You'll get far more from it than you would in winter or after heavy rain when the earthworks are harder to read.
