Castlehill

The walk up Castlehill is proper rewarding if you're staying anywhere near Girvan. It's not a mountain - more a determined hill with attitude - but the views across the Ayrshire coast pay for the effort. The climb itself takes about an hour from the base, and it's steep enough that you'll feel your legs working, especially on the loose sections near the top.

Once you're up there, you get a full-circle vista: the Firth of Clyde stretches out, Arran sits on the horizon, and on a clear day the whole coastline unfolds. The summit's rocky, wind-swept, and a bit more dramatic than you'd expect from somewhere you can reach in under two hours from the car park.

This suits walkers who want a quick but genuine achievement. Families with reasonably fit kids (say, aged eight plus) manage it fine, though younger ones might find the steeper bits a slog. The terrain's rough underfoot - proper boots matter - and there's no cafe at the top, so bring water and maybe a sandwich if you want to linger.

If you're based at Haven Craig Tara Holiday Park nearby, it's an ideal half-day option when the weather's playing ball. Go in the morning before clouds roll in off the sea. It's free, naturally, and worth the drive. The view's genuinely excellent, not one of those summits that looks better in Instagram than in person.
