Castle View Park

The walk down to Castle View Park from central Stafford takes about twenty minutes, and you're rewarded with a proper slice of green space that feels genuinely removed from the town centre noise. This is a nature reserve rather than a manicured park - think woodland paths, open meadows, and the River Sow running through it all. The castle views that give it its name are more subtle than you might expect; you catch glimpses of Stafford Castle perched on the ridge above, but it's the river and the trees that do most of the heavy lifting here.

It's the sort of place walkers will appreciate far more than anyone after a quick stroll and a photo. Birders come here regularly - woodpeckers, nuthatches, and various warblers depending on season. Families with small children might manage an hour before the novelty of muddy paths wears off, but older kids who like scrambling about in woodland will happily spend a morning here.

You'll want to allow at least ninety minutes to do it justice, longer if you're actually trying to spot wildlife. The paths are well-trodden but can be damp in winter. There's no entry fee that I can find, and no facilities to speak of, so bring water. It pairs well with a visit to Stafford Castle itself - you can see both in a decent afternoon. If you're based at Canalside Camping or Poppy Fields Glamping nearby, this is an easy evening walk from either.
