The mound itself is what stops you in your tracks - a proper earthy bump rising from the Suffolk landscape east of Woodbridge, the sort of thing that makes you wonder what's underneath. This is Castle Mound, an archaeological site that's genuinely old, though what exactly happened here depends on who you ask and how much digging has actually been done. It's the kind of place that rewards curiosity more than it offers polished interpretation boards.

Walkers get the most from this one. There's no visitor centre, no café, just the mound and whatever story your imagination fills in. Could be Norman, could be Saxon - the earth doesn't always give up its secrets easily. You're looking at maybe thirty minutes here, tops, unless you're the type who enjoys standing about thinking deep thoughts on a slight hill. Bring decent shoes if the ground's been wet.

Families with younger kids might find it a bit underwhelming on its own - it's fundamentally an old bump with no interactive anything. But if you're basing yourself at one of the nearby parks - Secret Meadows is closest at just over three miles away, or Stonham Barns if you want touring pitches - you could easily tack this onto a morning walk. It's free, obviously, and open whenever you fancy turning up.

The real value here is context. Visit alongside Framlingham Castle or Sutton Hoo if you're serious about Suffolk's medieval past. On its own it's pleasant enough, but it won't change your life. Worth knowing about if you're passing through, not worth planning a trip around.
