Castle Law Hillfort

The walk up to Castle Law is steeper than it looks from the car park, and the wind hits you properly once you're above the tree line. You're climbing to an Iron Age hillfort that sits just outside Hawick - the kind of place where the views across the Borders suddenly make sense. The fort itself is marked by earthwork ramparts, concentric rings that loop around the hilltop like someone drew them with a giant compass. You can walk the perimeter and trace where the defensive walls once stood, which is more engaging than it sounds if you've got even a passing interest in how people lived 2,000 years ago.

It's free to visit and takes about 45 minutes round trip if you're not rushing, though you could easily stretch it to an hour if you're the type to sit and look at things. Families with reasonably energetic kids will manage fine - it's not technical, just a bit of a slog uphill. Hillfort enthusiasts will find it genuinely worthwhile; the layout is readable and the hilltop position tells you everything about Iron Age settlement patterns. History buffs who aren't specifically into archaeology might find 20 minutes is enough.
