Castle Law

There's a proper hill walk waiting above Coldstream, one that rewards your legs with views across the Borders and into England on a clear day. Castle Law is an iron age fort - you're walking up to the remains of what was essentially a defended settlement, with the ramparts still visible as earthworks if you know what to look for. The summit itself is straightforward to reach, maybe thirty minutes from the car park depending on fitness, and the path is well-trodden enough that you won't get lost.

The views are the main draw here, not dramatic ruins. You get proper rolling countryside, the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people fought over it. On a grey Scottish day it can feel a bit bleak, to be honest - the fort doesn't grab you the way a castle with walls does. But if the weather's cooperating, it's absolutely worth the walk.

Historically minded visitors will get something from understanding the site's iron age significance, though there's no interpretation on the ground. Families with children capable of a forty-minute round trip will find it straightforward and satisfying. Walkers treating it as a warm-up before tackling longer routes in the area will find it fits nicely into a morning.

Free to visit, naturally. Allow an hour including the ascent, views, and descent. Close enough to Coldstream Holiday Park that you could base yourself there and tick it off before lunch. It's not life-changing, but it's a cracking spot for a morning out.
