Castle House Museum Dunoon

The Castle House sits on Dunoon's main street, a Victorian townhouse that's been converted into a proper local museum. It's small but genuinely interesting - the sort of place where you'll spend an hour and actually learn something about the Clyde coast rather than just walk round feeling obligated.

Inside you'll find exhibits on Dunoon's heyday as a Victorian seaside resort, along with local history, archaeology, and some rather good displays on the Argyll connections. The building itself is the main draw - all ornate cornicing and period rooms that give you a feel for how the well-to-do lived when paddle steamers packed out the town. There's enough to engage adults properly, though younger kids might lose interest after thirty minutes unless they're into that sort of thing.

It's free entry, which is brilliant, and open Tuesday to Saturday from April through October, 10am to 4pm. Allow yourself an hour, ninety minutes if you want to read everything properly. The staff are chatty and genuinely knowledgeable about the area.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Hunters Quay Holiday Village is just under two miles away, with Beach House Pods and The Secret Glen Campsite also close by - this makes for a rainy afternoon option or a calm morning before heading out to bigger attractions. It works well alongside a walk round the seafront, and it's worth the effort if you're interested in Scottish social history. Not a main-event destination, but solid value for a couple of hours.
