Castle Hill

Standing 339 metres above the Wye Valley, this modest peak near Bakewell delivers proper Peak District views without the crowds that swarm Mam Tor. The walk up from the village takes about 20 minutes through sheep-dotted fields, following well-marked footpaths that can get muddy after rain.

From the summit, you'll see Chatsworth House spread out below like a doll's house, with the White Peak rolling away in gentle limestone folds. It's not the most dramatic viewpoint in Derbyshire - that honour goes to Kinder Scout - but on a clear day you can spot the darker gritstone edges of the Dark Peak to the north.

Dog walkers love it here, and you'll often have the top to yourself on weekday mornings. The descent via Edensor makes for a nice circular route if you've got an hour and a half to spare.
