Castle Grounds

The Castle Grounds is a proper nature reserve tucked away in Surrey, where old estate parkland has been allowed to rewild in the best possible way. You're walking through what was once formal gardens, but now the woodland has reclaimed most of it - gnarled oak trees, open glades, and paths that wind past the bones of a castle that's long gone. The appeal is straightforward: decent walking without being too demanding, and enough space to actually hear yourself think.

Walkers and families with younger kids will find this worthwhile. There's nothing museum-like or precious about it - you're just roaming round genuine woodland with a bit of history underneath. The reserve has that feeling of a place that doesn't try too hard, which is refreshing. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the mature trees attract decent numbers. An hour's gentle exploration is the sweet spot unless you're mapping every corner of the grounds.

If you're camping at Chantry Wood Campsite just up the road (1.5 miles), this is an easy morning walk before breakfast. It's also close enough to Edgeley Holiday Park and Firesyde for a pleasant afternoon ramble. The reserve slots nicely into a Surrey park holiday without feeling like a tick-box attraction - it's the sort of place you stumble across and are glad you did, rather than something you've travelled miles specifically to see. Free access and no faffing about with opening times makes it even better.
