Castle Gardens

Castle Gardens sits on the edge of Leicester, a nature reserve that manages to feel properly removed from the city despite being minutes from the centre. It's essentially a woodland walk with a bit of history - the grounds were once part of a castle estate, though what you'll see now is mature trees, open grassland, and the sort of quiet that makes you wonder why more people aren't here.

The main draw is the walking. There are decent paths through mixed woodland, enough to keep you occupied for an hour or so without it becoming a serious hike. The open areas are good for spotting birds, and if you time it right in spring or autumn you'll catch something worth pausing for. It's the kind of place where you actually notice the change of seasons - the bluebell season is worth planning around if you're staying nearby.

This works well as an addition to a caravan holiday at Bradgate Park or Green Acres - both are within five miles, making it an easy detour for an afternoon when you fancy something less structured. You're looking at two to three hours maximum, so fit it around other plans rather than banking a whole day on it.

Bring decent boots because the ground gets boggy after rain, and go early if you want any peace. Families with young kids will manage fine on the main paths, though it's not thrilling enough to hold attention all afternoon. History buffs might find the castle connection underwhelming - the actual remains are minimal. It's a walker's spot, fundamentally.
