Castell Cadwgan

Stone walls rise from a grassy mound just outside Aberaeron, marking the remains of what was once a proper medieval stronghold. Castell Cadwgan isn't much to look at now - you'll find fragments of masonry and earthworks rather than towering battlements. But for history enthusiasts, this 12th-century site tells a fascinating tale of Norman conquest and Welsh resistance along the Ceredigion coast.

Walking around the ruins takes about twenty minutes, though you could easily spend longer if you're keen on medieval architecture. The setting is peaceful enough, with views across the surrounding farmland towards the sea. Children might find it a bit dull unless they're already interested in castles and knights.

What makes this site particularly appealing is its proximity to several holiday parks. Camping on the Farm and Aeron Coast Caravan Park are practically next door, making it an easy morning walk for families staying nearby. Wide Horizons Holiday Park is just over a mile away, while Woodlands Holiday Park at Llanon offers another convenient base.

The ruins are freely accessible as far as I could tell, though there's no visitor centre or formal interpretation. It's the sort of place that rewards a bit of background reading beforehand. Worth combining with a trip into Aberaeron for its famous ice cream and harbour walks - together they make a proper day out along this lovely stretch of the Welsh coast.
