Cast Hills

The earthworks at Cast Hills, just outside Ripon, are properly understated - which is exactly why they're worth seeking out. What you're looking at are the remains of an Iron Age hill fort, low grassy ridges and ditches that wouldn't impress if you didn't know what you were looking at. Once you understand the scale of the thing - the multiple defensive lines, the sheer effort required to dig those ditches by hand - it clicks. You're standing in a place where people lived, worked, and defended themselves two thousand years ago.

History types will get the most from a visit here, particularly anyone interested in Iron Age settlement patterns. It's not dramatic like some hill forts - no steep cliffs, no commanding views across the Dales. The landscape around Cast Hills is fairly gentle, almost domestic. You can walk the perimeter in well under an hour, which makes it a decent stop if you're already exploring the Ripon area rather than a destination in itself.

The nearest facilities are in Ripon itself, a proper market town with decent pubs and restaurants. Woodhouse Farm Holiday Park is just down the road - about two miles away - so it's easy enough to pop out for an hour if you're staying locally. Go when the grass isn't waterlogged, ideally spring or autumn. There's no visitor centre or interpretation on site, so bring a bit of prior knowledge or download something about Iron Age Britain beforehand. It won't take long, but it'll make the visit make sense.
