Casken Hill

The walk up Casken Hill rewards you with views that stretch across Perthshire in a way that surprises given its modest height. It's not a dramatic peak - nothing that'll leave you gasping - but it's the kind of local favourite that makes proper sense when you're based near Perth and fancy something straightforward without the full mountain commitment.

The hill itself is accessible enough for a decent family outing or a solo walker after breakfast. You get proper views across the valley once you're up there, and on a clear day you can see why people keep coming back. The approach is fairly gentle, though boggy patches near the summit mean decent boots are worth the bother. Allow a couple of hours round trip unless you're dawdling.

It works well if you're staying at one of the nearby spots - Greenhill Farm Glamping or Broadslap Farm are close enough that you could do this as a morning walk before heading elsewhere. Maycroft Retreat and Alexander House are similarly convenient if you're in the area for a few days.

Best visited when the ground's had a few dry days, honestly. Spring and autumn tend to be better than high summer when the midges get going, and winter can be slippery. It's free to walk, naturally - just park sensibly near the trailhead and crack on. Not a destination that'll define your trip, but genuinely worth the morning if you're in Perthshire and the weather's looking decent.
