Carrs Park Beach

The shoreline here doesn't look like much at first - mudflats and reeds stretching out towards the water, a bit windswept and definitely not the postcard-pretty beach you might be hoping for. But that's rather the point. Carrs Park Beach, just outside Macclesfield, is a proper nature reserve where the wildlife matters far more than the Instagram moment.

You're looking at one of those places where birdwatchers genuinely lose track of time. Waders, plovers, the occasional rare migrant - the tidal mudflats here are exactly what these birds need. There's a decent footpath running alongside where you can walk without disturbing things, and the whole setup rewards patience more than speed. Bring binoculars. Bring a proper bird guide. Leave the expectations of sand and ice cream at home.

It's not a destination you'd plan the entire holiday around unless you're seriously into ornithology, but if you're staying at Sycamore Farm or Eastwood End - both within five miles - it's a solid morning's walk. The reserve is free to access, though facilities are minimal. Timing matters: dawn and dusk tend to be better for spotting, and obviously the tides dictate what you'll see. Winter brings different species than summer, so check what's been spotted recently before you go.

Families with young children might find it a bit quiet and muddy. Keen walkers and nature types will find it exactly their speed.
