Carron Wood

Carron Wood is a proper forest walk just inland from Stonehaven, the sort of place you stumble into without fanfare and leave wondering why it's not busier. The woodland sits thick with Scots pine and spruce, with paths that wind through the trees and open out onto surprisingly good views back towards the coast. You're talking maybe 30-40 minutes for a decent loop if you're not dawdling, though there's scope to stretch it out if the mood takes you.

It's excellent for families with older kids who can manage uneven ground - young ones might find it a bit samey after the first ten minutes. Dog walkers absolutely love it here. The paths are well-maintained enough that you won't need proper hiking boots, but decent trainers are sensible given the Scottish weather does what it likes.

Being free and unrestricted, you can arrive whenever suits. Early morning is proper lovely - fewer people and the light filters through the canopy beautifully. Come in autumn and the needle-drop gives the forest floor a gorgeous bronze tone.

If you're camped at Upper Crawton Park or the Queen Elizabeth Park site just outside Stonehaven, Carron Wood makes a straightforward morning excursion before heading to the coast proper. It's not a full day's entertainment, but as part of a broader Stonehaven itinerary it works well. Combine it with the town's seafront walks or a visit to Dunnottar Castle nearby, and you've got a solid day sorted. The forest does its job - quiet, green, and genuinely pleasant.
