Carrickfergus Mill Ponds

The Mill Ponds sit just outside Larne, a proper spot if you're after a bit of peace away from the coast road. These shallow pools were dug out centuries back to power the old mills, and nowadays they're absolutely teeming with birdlife. Herons work the shallows, water rail slip through the reeds, and if you time it right during migration season you'll catch all manner of passing visitors.

It's a short walk around the perimeter - nothing strenuous, dead easy even for families with younger kids. The viewing points are decent enough, though bring binoculars because the birds won't let you get close. Spring and autumn are your best bets for variety, but it's worth popping by any time of year if you're in the area. Winter can be bleak and muddy, mind you.

For birdwatchers this is solid ground. If you're just after a gentle stroll it's fine, though you might find it a bit limited if you're hoping for dramatic scenery - it's wetland walking, not mountain hiking. The real appeal is the wildlife, so manage your expectations accordingly. Down to Earth Wild Camping is only a few miles away, making it easy to slot this into a proper nature-focused break in Mid and East Antrim. All told, allow an hour, bring decent boots, and don't expect crowds.
