Carreg Winau

The walk up Carreg Winau rewards you with views across the Carmarthenshire valleys that stretch for miles on a clear day. It's not a massive peak - nothing that'll leave you gasping for breath - but it's a proper little outing if you're based around Lampeter and fancy something more than a flat stroll.

You're looking at a decent hike depending on which route you take, probably two to three hours all in. The summit itself is rocky and exposed, which means the wind can be fierce, but also means you're not hemmed in by trees. Walkers will genuinely enjoy this - it's the kind of place that feels rewarding without being brutally hard work.

Families with older kids can manage it fine. Younger ones might find it a slog, though. There's nothing technical about it, just determination and legs. The real value is in the walk itself rather than any facilities at the top - bring a packed lunch and you've got a decent day out.

If you're camping at one of the sites around Lampeter - Glynmarch Farm or Canvas & Campfires are both close enough - Carreg Winau makes a brilliant half-day excursion. Start early, get up and back before tea, and you'll have proper tired legs for sleeping well that night. The Carmarthenshire landscape deserves more attention than it gets, and this peak is a solid introduction to what the area offers.
