Carreg Dwfn

Getting up to Carreg Dwfn means a proper climb through the Carmarthenshire hills, and the effort pays off with views that stretch across the Black Mountains and beyond. It's a modest peak by Welsh standards, but that's partly what makes it work - you're not fighting through crowds to reach the summit cairn.

The walk itself takes you through moorland and open country, the kind of terrain where you notice the weather changing every ten minutes. Clear days reward you with visibility for miles. Misty ones feel appropriately atmospheric, though the views understandably disappear. Allow two to three hours for a round trip from Ammanford, depending on your pace and which route you choose.

This is walkers' territory, pure and simple. If you're after a gentle stroll with a cafe at the end, look elsewhere. But if you want to get away from the crowds that cluster around more famous peaks, and you're happy with a bracing hill walk, Carreg Dwfn delivers. Families with older children who can manage a few miles on foot will do fine; younger kids might find it tedious unless they're genuinely keen walkers.

Peak season is spring through early autumn, though winter walks have their own appeal if you're prepared for the conditions.
