Carr Wood

The trees here are proper tall, and the paths wind through in a way that makes you forget you're only a few miles from Ripon. Carr Wood is a straightforward woodland walk - nothing fancy, just good honest forest cover that's thick enough to keep things cool even on warmer days.

You get a decent sense of what the Yorkshire landscape looked like before everything got cleared for farming. The floor's soft with needles and leaf litter, and in spring there's bluebells doing their thing. It's the sort of place where kids can actually run about without you losing sight of them entirely, and walkers will find it's easy enough for any fitness level - no scrambling, no surprises.

Allow a couple of hours if you're not rushed. The woodland's big enough that you won't feel like you've done a lap in twenty minutes, but it's not so vast you need proper navigation skills. There are a few spots where the trees open up enough to get your bearings.

If you're based at Riverside Meadows Caravan Park or the York South Holiday Lodges nearby, this makes a natural morning walk before heading into Ripon proper. It's not a destination in itself - you won't travel an hour to get here - but as part of a park holiday in the area, it's exactly what you need: local, low-key, and genuinely pleasant for an hour or so among the trees.
