Carnock Moor

Carnock Moor is a proper working forest just outside Dunfermline - the kind of place where you can actually breathe properly and forget you're in central Scotland. Walking in here feels different from other Fife woodlands; the mix of conifers and mature deciduous trees creates this cathedral-like quality, especially on overcast days. There are decent paths threading through, though they're not manicured or waymarked like some nature reserves. You're genuinely exploring here, not following a visitor centre trail.

It's excellent for walkers who want a proper bit of exercise without heading for the Highlands. Dog owners absolutely love it - there's room to let them off lead and nobody's going to mind. Families with older kids will get a solid hour or two here without anyone complaining of boredom, though there's no playground or picnic facilities, so come prepared. Photographers might find something worthwhile depending on the light.

The nearest glamping option is Meadow View, just 3.5 miles away, and Fossoway Cabins are under five miles off, both rated highly. If you're basing yourself at either for a park break, Carnock Moor is the sort of place to spend a morning before heading back for lunch. Go early if you can - it gets quieter and the light's better. There's a car park at the main entrance, and admission appears to be free, though I'd check locally as access can occasionally change. Allow at least an hour, longer if you've got the time to properly wander.
