Carneddau Hengwm Southern Tumulus

Getting to this Bronze Age tumulus means a proper walk into the Carneddau hills above Talybont, and frankly that's half the appeal. You're climbing through moorland where the wind does most of the talking, and when you finally spot the low stone mound it feels less like a tourist tick and more like stumbling onto something genuinely old. The tumulus itself is modest - don't expect dramatic earthworks - but standing on the Gwynedd slopes with the Snowdonia ridges rolling out ahead makes the effort worthwhile.

Archaeology types will get the most from this. The site speaks to Bronze Age burial practices, and if you're the sort who reads landscape like other people read novels, there's real satisfaction in reading what these ancient folk chose this particular spot. Families with younger children might find the walk more rewarding than the destination itself - the hill country here is genuinely lovely, but a three-year-old won't care much about tumuli.

There's no visitor infrastructure, no café, no defined opening hours. It's free because there's nowhere to pay. Allow two to three hours return from the nearest parking, depending on your fitness. The walking itself is the real draw. If you're based at one of the nearby caravan parks - Rowen or Hendre Mynach are closest at under two miles - this makes a solid morning ramble before settling into a bigger exploration of the Conwy Valley. Worth the detour if you're already in the hills, but don't plan a holiday around it.
