Carn na Caorach

The walk up Carn na Caorach isn't long, but it's steep enough that you'll feel it in your legs by the top. From Inverness, it's a straightforward drive south towards Loch Ness - the peak sits above the loch's western shore, giving you views across the water that justify the climb.

This is a proper hill-walker's peak rather than a casual stroll. Allow two to three hours for the round trip depending on fitness and how long you linger at the summit. The path itself is a bit exposed in places and can get boggy lower down, so decent boots matter. Weather changes quickly up here, so check conditions before you head out.

What makes it worth the effort is the panorama once you're up. You get the full sweep of Loch Ness stretching away, Glen Affric visible on clear days, and on a good morning the light across the water is genuinely special. It's the sort of view that makes sense of the effort.

Walkers with mountain experience will find this rewarding; families with young kids might struggle with the gradient and exposure. If you're camping at Loch Ness Holiday Park or Loch Ness Shores just down the road, it's a brilliant way to spend a morning before heading back for lunch. The peak itself is free - it's the Highlands, after all - and there's basic parking near the trailhead. Go early if you can. The afternoon brings tourists and the cloud tends to roll in.
