Carn Menyn

The walk up Carn Menyn isn't long, but it's steep enough to make you work for the view. This Carmarthenshire peak sits at 1,207 feet and dominates the landscape around Clynderwen in a way you only really notice once you're standing on top of it.

What strikes you first is how exposed it feels. The summit is essentially bare rock and moorland - there's a stone cairn marking the top - and on a clear day you can see for miles across the Preseli Hills. On a grey day, which let's be honest is quite frequent round here, it's moody and atmospheric instead. The walk itself is straightforward from the car park below, taking about 45 minutes up and the same back down. Underestimate how muddy the paths get after rain.

This is proper terrain for walkers rather than casual strollers. Families with older kids who don't mind a genuine climb will find it rewarding. The views justify the effort - you're looking out over proper wild countryside, not tamed parkland. It's free, of course, and you can knock it off in an afternoon without faffing about.
