Carn Loch an t-Sionnaich

The walk up Carn Loch an t-Sionnaich isn't long, but it's properly steep in places and the reward is a view across Loch Ness that'll stop you in your tracks. The peak sits just outside Inverness, making it one of those rare hills where you can be out of the car and climbing within twenty minutes of leaving town.

It's a straightforward hill walk rather than a scramble - the path is clear enough, though boggy in patches - and takes about an hour and a half up and down depending on fitness. The summit is modest, granted, but the sight of Loch Ness spreading out below you like a proper Highland postcard makes the slog worthwhile. On a clear day you can see right down the length of the loch.

Walkers will find this a solid half-day outing, and it suits families with older kids who don't mind a bit of elevation gain. Younger children might struggle with the steepness, though determined ones do manage it. The wind can be a beast up there, so pack a decent jacket.

If you're staying at Loch Ness Holiday Park or Loch Ness Shores - both within four miles - this makes an easy morning before you head back for lunch. It's the sort of thing that doesn't require planning or permits, just boots and a bit of determination. Worth the detour from Inverness for the views alone.
