Carn Ingli Barrow Cemetery

The walk up Carn Ingli itself is the real draw here - a proper lung-burner through bracken and heather that rewards you with views across Cardigan Bay. The barrow cemetery sits near the summit, Bronze Age burial mounds scattered across the ridge. You won't find manicured grounds or interpretation boards. This is archaeology in the raw: lumpy ground, wild moorland, and the kind of quiet that makes you think.

Historically minded visitors will find plenty to chew over. The site reveals how people were burying their dead here four thousand years ago, positioning them high on the landscape. From a walker's perspective, it's genuinely good terrain - the climb takes about 45 minutes from Newport, and the views alone justify the effort. Children might struggle with the steep sections, and there's no path to speak of once you leave the main track.

Free to visit, completely open access. Go early morning if you want the place to yourself. The light's often better too. If you're based at one of the nearby parks - Llwyngwair Manor is barely over a mile away - this makes an excellent half-day outing. Carn Ingli works well paired with time at the lower-lying Preseli Hills or a wander round Newport itself. The weather here changes fast, so don't dismiss grey skies. Some of my best visits have been under cloud cover, when the landscape feels older somehow.
