Carn Bica

The walk up Carn Bica isn't long, but it punches well above its weight. This modest peak sits just outside Clynderwen in Pembrokeshire, and the views from the top sweep right across the Preseli Hills - proper wild moorland country that makes you feel like you've walked further than you actually have.

It's a straightforward climb, nothing technical, and takes about an hour there and back depending on your pace. The paths are well-trodden but boggy in places, so decent boots matter more than fitness. You'll want to go on a clear day because the summit itself is unremarkable - just rocky outcrops and gorse - but visibility is everything here. When conditions are good, the panorama justifies the effort: you can see right across West Wales, all the way to Cardigan Bay on a proper clear day.

Families with reasonably capable walkers will manage this fine. Kids who can walk three miles won't find it taxing, though there's not much to hold their attention once you summit beyond the views themselves. It's really a walker's spot, the kind of place you head to when you want to feel the landscape without needing scrambling skills or hours of hiking.

Free, obviously. No facilities at the top. If you're staying at Llwyngwair Manor Holiday Park just down the road, it's an excellent half-day excursion to break up the week. Go early to dodge afternoon mist rolling in off the coast.
