Carn an t-Sluic Dhuibh

The walk up Carn an t-Sluic Dhuibh rewards you with views across the Great Glen that justify the effort, even if the peak itself is modest by Highland standards. It's a decent half-day outing from Inverness - roughly two hours up, depending on your pace and how many times you stop to catch your breath on the steeper sections.

This is proper hill-walking territory, not a casual stroll. The path starts accessible enough but gets properly boggy in places, especially after rain. Good boots matter. On a clear day the views south toward the Great Glen and west toward the Monadhliath are genuinely excellent, though that's often a big 'if' in the Scottish Highlands.

Historically minded walkers will appreciate the landscape's layers - old drove roads crisscross these hills, and you're walking through country that shaped the region's identity. Families with decent hill experience will manage it fine; younger children or those unused to unrelenting gradients might find it a bit steep for what it is.

Allowing three to four hours return time keeps things relaxed. No facilities on the hill itself, so bring water and a packed lunch. The peak sits near enough to Inverness that you could easily base yourself at one of the excellent nearby parks - Loch Ness Glamping or Loch Ness Shores are both superb if you fancy something comfortable. Cannich Woodland is closer and cheaper if budget matters. Go midweek in summer for the best chance of clear views; October can be cracking too if the weather plays ball.
