Carlisle Castle

The sandstone walls loom over Carlisle town centre like they've got something to prove - and frankly, they've earned the right. This is one of England's most formidable border fortresses, built by Normans in 1122 and spent centuries holding the line against Scottish raiders. Walking through the gatehouse feels properly medieval, and the views from the battlements across the Eden Valley are worth the climb alone.

Inside, the keep is where things get interesting. You can work your way up through exhibits covering the castle's 900-year history - Mary Queen of Scots was locked up here, which alone tells you this place has seen drama. The dungeons are genuine and rather grim. Allow a solid two hours to do it justice, longer if you're into military history or want to linger over the views.

It's free to wander the grounds, though admission to the keep costs - English Heritage runs it, so membership saves money if you're castle-hopping round Cumbria. Families find it engaging rather than exhausting; older kids especially will get the siege warfare angle. The nearest caravan spots are Green Acres just three and a half miles out and Thornfield further afield, both cracking bases for exploring the wider region.

Go midweek if you can. Weekends bring school groups and the cafe gets rammed. Spring and autumn offer the best light for photographs, and you'll actually hear yourself think in the keep.
