Carlinwell Stone

A weathered slab of granite stands alone on the Aberdeenshire moors, and that's rather the point. Carlinwell Stone is a Bronze Age standing stone - the sort of thing you stumble upon while walking and suddenly realise you're looking at something three thousand years old. There's no interpretation board, no café, no gift shop. Just the stone, the landscape, and your own theories about why it was erected.

It's the kind of place that appeals to archaeology enthusiasts and serious walkers rather than casual visitors. You won't spend hours here - twenty minutes is generous - but the quiet and the age of it hit differently when you're standing right next to it. The moorland setting matters too; this isn't a manicured heritage site. It feels genuinely remote, which is exactly what gives it character.

Access is free, and there are no official opening hours because it's essentially unmanaged. The nearest base is Blairgowrie, about 20 minutes away, and you're well-positioned between Nethercraig Holiday Park and Five Roads Caravan Park if you're staying locally. Both sit within easy reach for a morning walk before heading elsewhere.

The real appeal here is doing it as part of a bigger walking route across the Highlands rather than making a special trip. If you're into Bronze Age monuments and moorland, you'll find it genuinely worthwhile. If you want something with more infrastructure and guaranteed entertainment, look elsewhere. Fair warning: the weather up there changes fast.
