Carlin Maggie

The walk up to Carlin Maggie, a distinctive standing stone near Kinross, takes you through proper Fife countryside - the kind of landscape that makes you understand why people settle here. It's an old megalith, weathered and companionable, sitting in a way that suggests it's watched over this corner of Scotland for longer than anyone cares to remember.

You won't find much ceremony around it. No visitor centre, no interpretive boards explaining its age or purpose. That's rather the point. What you get instead is a genuine hillside walk with decent views back towards Kinross and the surrounding Tayside hills. The stone itself is modest in scale but carries real presence - something about its solitude makes it feel weighty.

This suits walkers far more than casual drive-by tourists. Budget 90 minutes for a round trip from the nearest parking, which involves proper legwork rather than a gentle stroll. History enthusiasts will appreciate it for what it is - Bronze Age company, essentially - though don't expect the drama of somewhere like Callanish.

Families with younger children might find it a bit anticlimactic unless they're already keen on prehistoric sites. Teenagers and proper walkers will get more from it. The walk itself is the real draw, mind - the destination is almost secondary.

If you're based at Wild Goose Glamping or Kingdom Caravan Park nearby, it's absolutely worth the afternoon expedition. Combine it with a Kinross town walk or a longer ramble across the local hills. Free, obviously. Go when it's clear - misty days rob you of those views that make the leg work worthwhile.
