Water stretches out between granite slopes near Redruth, quiet and oddly hypnotic. Cargenwen No.1 Reservoir sits tucked into the moorland with the kind of stillness you don't often find in busy Cornwall. It's a working reservoir, so don't expect a seaside vibe - this is proper moorland scenery, the sort of place where the light changes every five minutes and you can actually hear yourself think.

Walking the perimeter is the main draw. The paths are straightforward enough, nothing technical, and the water itself reflects the sky nicely on a calm day. It's the sort of spot locals know and visitors rarely stumble upon, which is half its charm. Bring binoculars if you're into birds - the reservoir attracts waterfowl, and you'll likely have the place mostly to yourself. Allow an hour for a gentle circuit, maybe two if you're stopping to sit and stare.

Not for everyone, if I'm honest. If you're expecting lakeside facilities or a cafe, you'll be disappointed - there's nothing here but water and moorland. Kids might find it a bit dull unless they're the type who enjoy spotting birds or skimming stones. The light does extraordinary things here though, especially late afternoon, and it's genuinely worth the short drive from Redruth if you want a bit of solitude away from the coast.
