The car park at Hamsterley might sound like an odd thing to write about, but it's become something of a landmark for walkers exploring this corner of County Durham. It sits at the edge of Hamsterley Forest, a proper sprawling woodland that backs onto the Pennines, and serves as the main entry point for miles of forest trails. You'll find it signposted clearly enough from Barnard Castle, about fifteen minutes' drive south.

What makes it worth a mention isn't the tarmac itself - it's what it gives you access to. The forest spreads across 2,000 acres with everything from gentle riverside walks along the Bedburn Beck to more serious hill routes that'll take the better part of a day. Families with young kids do well here; the easier circuits are genuinely manageable for small legs, and there's a real sense of proper woodland rather than manicured park trails.

Car parking is straightforward and usually free - though it's worth checking before you head down if that's changed. Allow three to four hours minimum if you're actually going for a walk; most people just pull in, stretch their legs for forty minutes, and head back. Winter can get muddy, so proper boots are essential.
