Car Crash Hill

The name alone stops you in your tracks. Car Crash Hill is one of those peaks where the story matters as much as the view itself - it's in Bracknell Forest, a few miles south of Bracknell town, and it's exactly what the blunt title suggests: a spot where, years back, a car went over the edge. Dark history aside, it's a proper little vantage point if you're walking these woods and want to bag something with a bit of character.

The hill itself isn't dramatic or particularly high, but that's rather the point. This is countryside that rewards walkers who aren't chasing Alpine vistas. The surrounding forest gives you decent views across the Berkshire landscape, and on a clear day you can make sense of where you've come from and where you're heading next. It's the sort of place that works best as part of a longer ramble rather than a destination in itself.

If you're staying at Warfield Park or Scotlands House Campsite - both within a few miles - this would slot nicely into a morning walk. Families with older kids who can handle a proper walk will appreciate the story as much as the terrain. Younger ones might find it a bit underwhelming unless you're combining it with other forest trails. Allow an hour or so if you're making a dedicated trip, less if you're passing through. There's no visitor centre or facilities up there, so go prepared. Best visited when the forest isn't waterlogged, which rules out much of winter.
