Cappagh Lough

The water here is properly dark and still, ringed by low hills that give Cappagh Lough its modest but genuine appeal. You're looking at a freshwater lake just outside Newry, the kind of place locals know well and visitors stumble upon by accident - which is usually when it's best.

There's not much fuss about it. No visitor centre, no car park with a cafe, just a quiet stretch of water that's good for a walk around the perimeter if you've got half an hour going spare. The views back towards the Mourne Mountains are decent enough, especially on a clear day when the light catches the water properly. Birdwatchers tend to find their way here, and it's the sort of spot where you might actually see something rather than just hear car doors slamming.

It works well as a low-key addition to a Newry-based trip rather than a main event. If you're staying at somewhere like Hilltop Hideaway - just five miles away with a private hot tub to retreat to - this makes an easy morning or late afternoon wander before you head back for a proper dinner. Families with young children might find it a bit sparse; there's no play area, no picnic facilities that I could see. But if you want twenty minutes of actual quiet near water, without the Instagram crowds, it's worth the short drive.
