Capel Wood

Walk into Capel Wood and you're immediately wrapped in that particular Kent woodland smell - damp earth, rotting leaves, and the green crush of deciduous trees overhead. It's a proper forest rather than a managed park, which means winding paths that feel genuinely exploratory rather than mapped-out tourist trails.

The main appeal here is straightforward: woodland walking. The canopy's thick enough to be interesting without being claustrophobic, and there's enough variation in the terrain to keep legs engaged without requiring serious fitness. Families with kids aged six and up will do well - younger children might find the lack of waymarked loops a bit much, but school-age walkers who like a bit of adventure will be into it. Serious hikers won't find much challenge, but that's not really the point.

It's free to walk here, and you can easily spend an hour or two depending on how deep you go. Spring and early summer are lovely - the canopy fills out and the woodland floor livens up. Autumn's equally good for that atmospheric, slightly eerie feel. Winter's workable too, though muddy patches are inevitable.

Asford's just down the road, so it slots neatly into a broader park holiday in the area. Broadhembury Caravan & Camping Park is barely a mile and a half away and well-rated, making Capel Wood an easy morning or afternoon venture from base camp. It's the sort of place that doesn't demand much planning - just turn up with decent boots and let the paths take you where they will.
