Cantraydoune Motte

The mound rises out of the landscape about five miles south of Inverness like something left behind by giants. Cantraydoune Motte is a Norman earthwork - basically a raised fortress from the 12th century, though what stands now is just the defensive bank and ditch that once held a wooden palisade. Not much to look at if you're expecting castle ruins, but if you understand what you're seeing, it's genuinely interesting.

You get a proper sense of how these Normans worked their way into the Scottish Highlands, building control points along crucial routes. The site itself is free and accessible - it's essentially open countryside, though there's no visitor centre or interpretation boards. Bring a camera and maybe fifteen minutes if you want photographs. History enthusiasts will find it worthwhile; families with young kids might find it over in five unless you're keen on explaining medieval military architecture.

Worth timing into a broader Highland trip rather than making it a sole destination. You're bang between Ardtower Caravan Park and Barrow Campsite near Nairn, both excellent bases if you're caravanning. Combine it with a drive through the Moray area or a visit to Inverness itself - the motte takes no effort to see, and it's the kind of detail that makes a regional holiday feel properly connected to the landscape's actual history, rather than just tourist-trap stuff.
