Cantley Park

The wetland at Cantley Park sits on the edge of Wokingham like something the town has almost forgotten about. It's a proper working nature reserve - not a manicured visitor attraction, but a place where the wildlife genuinely comes first. You're wandering through reed beds and woodland with the occasional sighting of kingfishers, herons, and if you're lucky, water voles darting between the margins.

The main draw is a looped walk around the water - take an hour, maybe ninety minutes if you're serious about birdwatching. It's flat and straightforward, so families with younger kids won't struggle, though there's not much to "do" in the traditional sense. This isn't a playground or a visitor centre with cafes. It's a quiet space for watching, listening, and if you're into that sort of thing, twitching. Winter brings migrating birds; spring is when the breeding season gets interesting.

If you're staying at one of the nearby parks - Scotlands House is only 4 miles away and excellent - Cantley works as a morning outing before heading somewhere with more facilities. Pair it with a walk round Wokingham town itself or push on towards Warfield Park for a change of scenery. It's free to access and there's no specific visiting hours, though dawn is genuinely the best time if you want to see anything. Not a blockbuster attraction, but real and unrushed.
