Canterbury Rew

A proper woodland walk through Surrey's countryside, Canterbury Rew is the sort of place you stumble across rather than plan for. It's ancient forest - the kind with gnarled oaks and a real sense of age about it - and it sits just a few miles south of Guildford, making it dead easy to access from either of the nearby holiday parks.

The forest itself isn't massive, so don't expect hours of wandering. What you get instead is genuine peace and some lovely walking through mixed woodland, with paths that wind between trees and occasional clearings where light filters through. It's the kind of spot where you might actually see deer if you're lucky and quiet. There's nothing flashy here - no visitor centres, no cafes - which is rather the point. Just trees, soil underfoot, and the sound of birds.

Walkers will get the most from this. Families with young kids might find it pleasant for an hour's amble, but there's not much to hold their attention beyond climbing trees and splashing in puddles. History types will appreciate the fact you're walking through woodland that's been here for centuries.

It works brilliantly as a morning walk from either Glamping Holiday or Care Ashore Campsite - both within easy driving distance. Close enough that you're not spending half your day travelling, but far enough away to feel properly removed. Free to access, and you can do a decent circuit in 60 to 90 minutes depending on pace. Best in autumn when the forest floor is thick with leaves, or spring when everything's just coming back.
