Canonteign Falls

The walk down to Canonteign Falls takes you through proper woodland, and it's genuinely lovely - the kind of place where you remember why you came to Devon in the first place. The falls themselves are the real draw: a 220-foot cascade that drops dramatically into a narrow gorge, surrounded by ancient trees and moss-covered rocks that make the whole thing feel a bit timeless.

You'll need proper walking boots. The path is steep in places and can get slippery after rain, so it's not a casual stroll. Most people allow an hour or so to get down, have a look around, and climb back up again - not gruelling, but you'll feel it in your legs. It's free to visit, which is generous given the effort involved.

This is cracking for walkers and photographers rather than small children. Teenagers will probably find it interesting enough, but anyone under six might struggle with the descent. History types will appreciate the fact that people have been coming to this spot for centuries - there's something about the scale of it that makes you understand why.

Near Newton Abbot, it slots well into a park holiday in the area. If you're staying at Oakmoor Touring Park or Devon Heaven Hideaways - both just a short drive away - it makes for a proper morning or afternoon outing without feeling rushed. Go early if you can, especially in summer, to avoid the crowds that do build up on decent days.
