Cannop Ponds - Forestry England

Three man-made ponds surrounded by dense Forest of Dean woodland - that's Cannop, and it's a proper escape if you're camping nearby at Whitemead or one of the other sites dotted around Lydney. The ponds themselves are the main draw, created for industrial purposes centuries back but now they're just tranquil stretches of water ringed by towering conifers and the occasional splash of a fish. You can walk the perimeter easily enough, which takes a good hour or so depending on pace and how often you stop to watch the water. Families find it decent enough for a morning wander - the paths are fairly flat, kids can throw stones in (though they probably shouldn't), and the forest gives that proper woodsy atmosphere without being remotely strenuous. Birdwatchers often camp out here with binoculars; it's genuinely good for spotting mallards and the occasional heron if you're patient. The whole thing's free and open to the public - typical Forestry England setup. Best visited early morning or late afternoon when you'll have the place more or less to yourself and the light's better for photography. It's not dramatic or showy, and honestly if you've only got an afternoon it might feel slight, but paired with a longer Forest of Dean exploration it slots in nicely. Most folk base themselves at Bracelands or Greenacres Campsite and work outwards from there. Go when the weather's dry - the paths can get boggy and muddy after rain.
