Canbury Gardens

The Thames Path cuts through Canbury Gardens like a green ribbon through suburban London, and it's one of those spots where you suddenly remember why the river matters. Proper riverside walking territory - wide open meadows, tree-lined paths, and enough space to actually breathe without tripping over someone's selfie stick.

It's a nature reserve, so expect wildflowers, birds, and the occasional fisherman pretending he's having a profound moment by the water. The gardens sit between Kingston and Chessington, which makes them handy for breaking up a caravan holiday at either Walton on Thames or Chessington World of Adventures. Spring's when it shows off properly, with blossom and nesting birds doing their thing. Summer's pleasant but busier. Autumn's underrated if you like the amber-light feeling.

Kids might find it a bit quiet after twenty minutes unless they're keen on spotting waterfowl or climbing trees, which is fine - it's more for adults who want to remember there's countryside minutes from the M25. Dog-friendly and properly maintained, even if it lacks the manicured feel of grander London parks. If you're camping nearby, it's genuinely worth the short drive. Not Instagram gold, just solid.
