The woodland walk at Canada Wood, just outside Ripon, is a straightforward affair - dense trees, well-trodden paths, and the kind of quiet that makes you remember why you came to Yorkshire in the first place. There's nothing flashy about it. No visitor centre, no gift shop, no Instagram moment waiting to happen. What you get instead is a proper forest walk, the sort where you might spot deer if you're lucky and the birds actually outnumber the people.

It works best for families with younger kids who need a proper stomp around without the commitment of a full moorland hike. An hour here, perhaps ninety minutes if you take it slowly and let the children do their thing, and you've ticked the woodland box. The paths are accessible enough, though they can be boggy after rain - hardly surprising for North Yorkshire.

If you're based at one of the nearby glamping spots like Camp Kátur or the caravan parks scattered round Ripon, Canada Wood makes an easy half-morning detour. It pairs well with the market town itself, where you can grab lunch and actually get your bearings. Don't expect wilderness. Do expect a bit of tranquility and the chance to walk without fighting crowds.

The best time is late spring when the undergrowth has enough green to be interesting but hasn't yet become oppressively thick. Autumn works too, if you're after that rustling-leaves vibe. Worth twenty minutes' drive from your accommodation? Yes. Worth a special trip from elsewhere? Only if you're in the area anyway.
