Canada Common sits just outside Salisbury as a proper working nature reserve - the kind of place where you'll actually see wildlife rather than just read about it. The mix of woodland and open grassland gives you decent walking without the tourist crowds that clog up the cathedral town centre. You're looking at maybe an hour to ninety minutes if you do the whole thing properly, though you can potter about for longer if birds are your thing.

It's genuinely good for families with older kids - there's enough to explore and the terrain's manageable. Younger ones might get restless unless spotting things keeps them entertained. Serious walkers will find it a bit modest compared to what else is in the area, but it works nicely as a break between other activities.

The ground can be boggy after rain, so proper boots matter. There's no visitor centre or facilities that I'm aware of, so come prepared. It's free to access, which is the decent bit.

If you're staying at Green Hill Farm Holiday Village just up the road - seriously good ratings, that one - Canada Common makes a proper morning outing before heading into Salisbury itself. Even from Longbeech Campsite three miles away it's an easy drive. You won't feel like you've conquered Everest, but on a clear day with something decent to see in the scope, it's exactly what a nature reserve should be - low key and genuine.
