Can Ban

A proper Highland peak that catches most visitors off guard with how rewarding it is. Can Ban sits above Newtonmore and doesn't demand a slog up some endless moorland - the walk is tight and interesting, working through forest before opening out to views that stretch across the Cairngorms. On a clear day you'll see Ben Nevis in the distance, though honestly the drama is in what's directly below: the Spey Valley unfolds like a map.

It's best suited to walkers who want something real without needing full mountaineering kit. The ascent takes roughly two hours depending on fitness, and you can loop it fairly neatly. Not one for young children unless they're already mountain-ready - the paths are steep in sections and there's exposure higher up. History buffs won't find much here; this is purely about the walk and the vistas.

Get up early. The Highlands' weather turns on a sixpence, and afternoon clouds regularly swallow the summit. Spring through early autumn is ideal, though November can throw up crystalline days if you're lucky. Allow four to five hours including rest stops.

If you're based at Laggan Glamping or Invernahavon Caravan Park nearby, this makes a solid day out without needing to travel far. It pairs well with lower-level exploring around Newtonmore itself. The village has decent cafes for a proper breakfast before heading up - you'll want fuel in the tank.
