Camp HIll

The walk up Camp Hill takes about twenty minutes from the car park near Crewe, and it's steep enough to make you work for the view but not so brutal that you'll regret it halfway. Once you're up there, the Staffordshire landscape opens out properly - rolling fields, distant ridges, and on a clear day enough visibility to make sense of where you actually are in the Midlands.

It's not a spectacular peak by Lake District standards, but that's rather the point. Camp Hill rewards you with genuine isolation and the kind of quiet you don't get in more famous spots. Walkers will find it straightforward and satisfying; families with teenagers will manage it fine, though younger kids might find the climb tedious for what amounts to a hill rather than a destination in itself.

The summit itself is marked and unremarkable - no cafe, no gift shop, no drama. Just grass and a view. You'll need decent boots if it's been wet. Allow an hour return journey if you're not rushing.

If you're staying at Fledgling Farm nearby, it makes a decent morning walk to shake off the campsite feeling. Combine it with exploring Crewe proper or head towards the higher ground further south for more substantial hiking. Worth doing once if you're in the area, but don't expect fireworks.
