Camlough Lake

The water here is properly stunning - a long, narrow stretch of blue that sits in a glacial valley just south of Newry, with the Mourne Mountains rising up behind it like a proper backdrop. Camlough Lake is one of those places that works for almost everyone, whether you're after a straightforward walk round the shore or something more serious into the hills beyond.

The lake itself is about three miles long, and there's a decent path that runs alongside it - gentle enough for families with kids, interesting enough that you won't feel like you're just trudging along. The water's cold, obviously, but on a warm day the whole valley cools down nicely. Bring binoculars if you're into birds; the place attracts all sorts. You can easily spend two to three hours here without rushing, or just do a quick lap if time's tight.

It's free to visit, no facilities to speak of, so come prepared. The best light hits the water in early morning or late afternoon - midday can feel a bit flat. Winter walks are moody and atmospheric; summer weekends get busy with locals but never rammed.

If you're staying at Hilltop Hideaway just down the road - that pod with the hot tub is a proper treat - Camlough makes an ideal morning or evening outing. The Mournes are right there if you want something more demanding, but this lake is the kind of place that reminds you why you came to Northern Ireland in the first place.
