Camerton Wood

A proper Somerset woodland that doesn't try to be anything fancy. Camerton Wood sits just outside Mells, and it's the sort of place you stumble into when you're exploring the quieter corners of the Mendips rather than a destination in itself.

The woodland walk here is straightforward - mixed deciduous trees, decent paths, nothing that'll challenge serious hikers but enough to keep you occupied for a good hour or so. Spring's when it's nicest, with bluebells carpeting the forest floor. Summer gets a bit muggy under the canopy. You'll see the occasional dog walker and maybe a local or two, but it rarely feels rammed.

Kids will enjoy it for a run around without the intensity of a proper adventure park. The paths are wide enough for buggies in places, though it's not purpose-built for them. History buffs might appreciate that this is mining country - the industrial heritage of East Somerset is all around, though the wood itself won't spell it out for you.

If you're staying at Glamping on the Hill just up the road, it's a logical morning walk before heading to somewhere with more structure - Mells itself has decent pubs and the valley's worth exploring properly. Free to access and open whenever you fancy, really, which is how these local woodlands tend to work.

Honestly? It's pleasant enough but not a reason to plan your whole trip around. Good filler between bigger attractions.
